Lighted Puppy Ornament – Free Pattern

By request I have FINALLY gotten a puppy ornament together – and you get to choose the look!!

Puppy Ornament

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Main color worsted wt [4] yarn; a battery operated tea light; Red 3D fabric paint; Black 3D fabric paint; 2 – 10mm wiggle eyes; Size G / 4.0mm crochet hook; stitch marker; craft glue; scissors; and a yarn needle.

NOTES: This project is worked in continuous rounds not joining.

Stitches and Abbreviations
ch… chain  sc… single crochet
st… stitch hdc… half double crochet
sl st… slip stitch   dc… double crochet

FACE:
Round 1: With main color and G/4.0mm crochet hook make 10 sc in a magic circle making sure not to pull the center closed. Use a stitch marker to keep track of each round by placing it in the first stitch and move it up for each round. (10 sc)

Round 2: Work 2 single crochet in each stitch around. (20 single crochet) At this point I like to place the “flame” of the candle into the center hole and adjust making sure it fits snugly then I secure and weave in the center yarn tail. Now is a good time to use either the black paint or a black marker to color the flame (or nose) black so it has time to dry while finishing the rest of the ornament.

Rounds 3-7: sc in each stitch around. Do NOT fasten off, Place the stitch marker in the loop of the last stitch and cut a long enough tail for sewing then set aside. (If your tea light happens to be a little taller you can add an 8th round)

CHOOSE YOUR STYLE OF EARS (make 2):
Long earsLong Ears: With main color ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 10 ch. Finish off

Short EarsShort Ears:  With main color ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, ch 2, sl st to 1st ch of starting chain. Finish off.

Sew the ears to the top of the face between the 4th and 5th rows and about 2-3 st apart. Then I took about a 10 in piece of yarn (you could use a piece of ribbon instead) and looped it behind the ears as a hanger so it will easily hang up.

Next it’s time to put the crocheted piece on the tea light. Slide it on like a sock making sure the “flame” fits nice and snug in the hole of the face. Put your yarn needle on the tail you left and start weaving it around the last row tightening it just enough to fit snugly around the base of the tea light, but making sure the on/off button is still operational.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Glue on the wiggle eyes and use the black 3D paint to make a mouth and red paint for the tongue. Now enjoy your creation!
