I attended my very first Crochet Guild of America (CGOA) Crochet Conference held in Charleston, SC this month. I expected to learn from the great classes and be awed by my crochet superheros, yet I came home with so much more!
So first we’ll talk about the obvious… The CGOA offers so many great classes to improve and expand your skills. These classes are taught by the top crochet people in the industry. I took only 3 classes this year and now wish I had taken another one or two. The classes I took were Reversible Intarsia (half double crochet) and Cables Over the Edge both taught by Laurinda Reddig and Tunisian Puffs, Posts, Cables and Connections taught by Darla Fanton.
The design competition is the place to showcase your designs. This competition is where the designers save their best work to show off to fellow crocheters. Winners are chosen in several categories and a grand prize winner over all. There is also a people’s choice award so all attendees get to cast their vote for their favorite. I didn’t get my entry done in time for the competition this year, but I’ll have something to enter next year for sure!
The CGOA held a business meeting so we could all hear what is happening with the organization and there are some exciting things coming up this next year. There was also a market for shopping all the fun yarn and accessories available. Buttons, beads, shawl pins, books and fun stuff joins all the yarny goodness. My suitcase gained 12 lbs. (according to the airport bag check) from my shopping there LOL!
Watching Doris Chan get inducted into the CGOA Hall of Fame was FANTASTIC! What an experience! The banquet and style show is the grand finale of the weekend. I love seeing the gorgeous work the designers show off on the runway. A perfect way to end the conference and to inspire you to come next year either.
The best part of the whole weekend was meeting my crochet superheros and Facebook friends. I am so blessed I got the chance to meet my crochet Gurus and meet some new friends. This whole event is in my top 10 of best experiences in my life. If you couldn’t tell I am already making plans to attend next year in Chicago.
I encourage you to go to my FB Album just for this conference to see some of the other pictures of the people I met while there. Click [HERE] to see some more pictures. I hope you enjoyed looking at the conference through my eyes and next year I hope you can see it through your own!
